CHRS Recertification by Continuing Education

To renew your Certified HR Specialist certification via continuing education, follow the steps below. If you have any questions, please contact Kristi White at whitekr@msu.edu.

 

  1. Engage in 28 hours of continuing education

    During the two years after you earn your certification or recertification.

    • ACTIVITIES THAT EARN CE CREDITS

      Recertification may be earned through a variety of continuing education activities. While the education need not be directly related to the area of your certification, activities should be related to your professional responsibilities.

      While recertification activities do not need to be pre-approved, if you have any question about the availability of credits for a particular activity, complete and submit the credit evaluation form.

      The table below lists these activities and the corresponding number of continuing education credits.

      Certified Labor Relations Leader CLRL 38.5 credits
      Certified Labor Relations Professional - CLRP 32.5 credits
      Certified Human Resources Specialist - CHRS 32.5 credits
      Certified Human Resources Specialist for K-12 Administrators - CHRS K-12 32.5 credits
      Certified Workers' Compensation Professional - CWCP 28 credits
      Certified Family Medical Leave Specialist - CFMLS 7 credits
      Other SHRLR Professional Development in-person or online courses 1 credit per hour of instruction. Breaks and lunches are not included
      NOTE: No supporting documentation is required for classes taken through MSU SHRLR Professional Development.
      Other Activities CE Credits
      Development or presentation of training programs. 3 credits each hour of training provided
      Participation in labor contract negotiations. 7 credit per hour of negotiations
      Participation in an arbitration hearing. 4 credit hours
      Serving as an advocate in an arbitration hearing. 8 credit hours
      Participation in major projects such as six-sigma and change initiatives that are related to professional development can count for credit if a written summary of said accomplishment is submitted. The essay must include an outline of the project, the applicant's role in the project, and a statement of what was learned and why the project was relevant. 3 credits per project
      A written summary of contemporary books or articles pertaining to the profession can be submitted for credit. The summary should be 2-4 pages in length and should include implications for the applicant, his/her organization and the field in general. 2 credits per summary
      A successfully completed college course pertaining to the profession from an accredited institution. The applicant must achieve a GPA of 2.5 or higher to receive this credit. 28 credit hours

  2. Apply for recertification

    Complete the Application for Recertification form and email, along with supporting documentation to Kristi White at whitekr@msu.edu.

    • SUPPORTING DOCUMENTATION

      Supporting documentation must be submitted with the Application for Recertification form.

      Two types of supporting documentation must be submitted per program. You will need to submit at least one document from each section below to validate your continuing education credits for recertifcation.

      1. DOCUMENTATION OF PARTICIPATION
        Acceptable documents include:

        1. Certificate of Attendance
        2. Unofficial Transcript
        3. Sign-in sheet showing your signature
        4. Signed Affirmation of Activity form confirming your participation

      2. DOCUMENTATION OF CONTENT AND CONTACT HOURS
        Acceptable documents include:

        1. Detailed agenda, including dates and times of the program or activity
        2. Program announcement that includes dates, times, topics covered, and learning objectives
        3. Signed Affirmation of Activity form indicating the length and type of activity
          1. A single Affirmation of Activity form may be used to indicate both your participant and the content/contact hours
        4. A written review of a business book

      Note: Supporting documentation is not required for courses taken through MSU SHRLR Professional Development.

  3. Submit the recertification fee

    2024 CHRS Recertification:
    Fee: $95

    Note: During payment on the next page, please disregard the location and start/end dates as these are not applicable to recertification registrations.

    2023 CHRS Recertification:
    Fee before January 1, 2024: $95
    Fee between January 1, 2024 - June 30, 2024: $145
    (includes late registration free)
