Mentoring

The SHRLR Peer Mentoring Program is intended to ease the transition for new students into graduate school life - personally, academically, and professionally. Mentors will serve as one of the first points of contact and assist in the socialization of incoming students to the program, as well as prepare them for the career search and interview process. The mentoring program provides an opportunity for mentors to develop unique skills and relationship building that will be incredibly valuable in the future. Mentees are able to gain knowledge from students who have been in the same place just a year earlier and continuously have a source of support throughout their time in the HRLR program.

Objectives:

  • Acquaint each new student with the culture and expectations of the HRLR program and Michigan State University
  • Provide incoming students with a resource who can share guidance and advice
  • Prepare students for the recruiting season in the form of resume assistance, mock interviews, and general career development
  • Support the transition from either undergraduate studies or prior career paths to graduate work and opportunities in the HR profession
  • Connect students with fellow peers, faculty, and staff
  • Promote participation in academic, professional, and social events
