Jim Pruitt, MHRLR ’74
From Labor History to HR Leadership: The Journey to Kaiser Permanente
Why Pursue a Master's in HRLR?
Jim's journey into the world of human resources and labor relations began during his undergraduate studies at Berkeley, where he developed a keen interest in labor history. Initially, he hoped to join the research department of a union. However, his coursework at Michigan State University's School of Human Resources and Labor Relations (SHRLR) sparked a shift in focus, leading him to pursue a career in HR and labor relations.
Why MSU's MHRLR Program?
Michigan State University's reputation as one of the most highly regarded universities in the U.S. was a significant factor in Jim's decision. He knew that SHRLR's program would offer the focus and opportunities he needed to launch a successful career.
Key Influences During the Program
Jim's graduate assistantship with Professor Daniel Kruger left a lasting impact. Professor Kruger, known for his remarkable ability to combine scholarship with community outreach, served as both a mentor and inspiration. Jim also fondly recalls Professor Michael Moore's engaging HR Practices class, particularly the "frisson" and overall excitement of his Monday night class in South Kedzie Hall during the Winter Term of 1974.
Memorable Experiences
One standout memory for Jim was attending labor arbitrations with Professor Kruger. These hands-on, real-world experiences offered invaluable insights into labor relations.
Current Role and Achievements
Today, Jim serves as Vice President of Labor Relations at Kaiser Permanente, where he oversees and participates in labor negotiations. His accomplishments include negotiating hundreds of labor contracts in healthcare and contributing to building a Labor Management Partnership at Kaiser Permanente.
Jim's influence extends beyond his role, as he proudly served as president of the Labor and Employment Relations Association (LERA). Reflecting on this honor, Jim expressed humility in following in the footsteps of two former SHRLR professors—Charles C. Killingsworth and Jack Stieber—both past presidents of LERA and eminent scholars in the field.
Impact of the MHRLR Program
Jim credits his MHRLR degree as a recognized credential that propelled his career. It laid the foundation for a lifetime of achievements and recognition in HR and labor relations.
