Dr. Peter Berg Appointed Director of Michigan State's School of Human Resources & Labor Relations

We are pleased to announce the appointment of Peter Berg, PhD, to the role of Director for the School of Human Resources and Labor Relations (SHRLR). Dr. Berg assumes the Director role after serving as Associate Director for Academic Programs for the past four years and as a faculty member in the School since 1999.

Berg received his PhD in labor economics from the University of Notre Dame. His research interests include work-life flexibility policies and practices, the implications of an aging workforce for public policy and management practice, and international comparisons of flexible work arrangements. Dr. Berg is the author of numerous publications in a variety of academic journals including the Industrial and Labor Relations Review, Human Resource Management Review, and Human Relations. He is also co-author of the book Manufacturing Advantage: Why High Performance Work Systems Pay Off. Berg has served as an executive board member of the Labor and Employment Relations Association (LERA), as President and board member of the Industry Studies Association, on the editorial board of the ILR Review, and on the international advisory board of the British Journal of Industrial Relations.

As an expert in labor and employment relations, Dr. Berg has lived and conducted research as a Fulbright Scholar in Germany and Australia, and served as a research economist at the Economic Policy Institute in Washington D.C. Berg has conducted research or presented his work in over 20 countries around the world.

Joining the School of Human Resources and Labor Relations (then the School of Labor and Industrial Relations) in 1999, Professor Berg has taught graduate courses in collective bargaining and comparative employment relations and has led several graduate school study abroad trips to Germany and China. As Associate Director, he has worked collaboratively to maintain the School’s world-class Master of Human Resources & Labor Relations program, while helping to build a thriving PhD program and growing Human Capital and Society undergraduate program.

Dr. Berg looks forward to working with the SHRLR faculty, Advisory Board members, alumni, staff, students, and College of Social Science leadership to help build upon SHRLR’s strengths while creating opportunities to help the School and all of its stakeholders succeed in the future.
