In Brave New Workplace: The Next Careers? the Sharper Focus/Wider Lens faculty panel will explore the emerging field of neuroscience, how supercomputers are changing the day, the perspective of an entrepreneur, creativity in the workplace and how employees hold themselves accountable at work.

Jason Huang receives the 2016 William A. Owens Scholarly Achievement Award
Please join us in congratulating Jason for receiving the 2016 William A. Owens Scholarly Achievement Award from the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology for the best refereed journal article in IO psychology: “Effectiveness of Job Search Interventions: A Meta-Analytic Review,” Psychological Bulletin, 140(4), 1009–1041.
Joseph Guzman named Interim Director of the Chicano/Latino Studies Program
The Chicano/Latino Studies (CLS) Program promotes research and education across disciplines on the histories and the cultures of Chicanas/Chicanos and Latinas/Latinos.
It focuses on the historical, cultural, and social contributions of the diverse indo-afro-hispano citizens of the United States over the last 500 years as well as the status and conditions of ethnic minorities and emerging populations in the United States.
Jeff Ericksen named Director of the Center for Integrative Studies in Social Science
The Center for Integrative Studies (CIS) administers the integrative studies core curriculum in social science (ISS) as well undergraduate majors in Interdisciplinary Studies (IDS) and Global and Area Studies (GLAS). In 2015, CIS faculty taught ISS courses to over 13,000 MSU students and Interdisciplinary Studies represented the fourth largest major in the College of Social Science with 565 students.
Mevan Jayasinghe to receive the 2015 Academy of Management "International HRM Scholarly Research Award"
This prestigious award is given to the author of the "most significant article in international HRM" published in the past year in recognized journals and research annuals. Mevan is receiving this award in recognition of his article "A meta-analysis of country differences in the high-performance work system-business performance relationship: The roles of national culture and managerial discretion", which was published in the Journal of Applied Psychology.
Peter Berg elected President of Industry Studies Association (ISA)
Our very own Peter Berg was elected as the President of the prestigious Industry Studies Association (ISA) at the annual ISA meeting and conference in Kansas City, MO last week. The president serves a 2 year term and is elected by the Board of Directors of the ISA.

Dale Belman awarded Princeton University's William G. Bowen Award for the Outstanding Book on Labor and Public Policy for 2014
This award winning book, "What Does the Minimum Wage Do?" co-authored by our very own, Dale Belman, recently received the William G. Bowen Award for the Outstanding Book on Labor & Public Policy. We congratulate him and his co-author Paul J. Wolfson on this honor.

Distinguished alum, Shaun Pichler, receives California State University Fullerton's Mihaylo College of Business's top faculty honor
Shaun Pichler (PhD, 2009), a distinguished graduate of our doctoral program, has further distinguished himself. He just received California State University Fullerton's top honor for faculty in their college of business, the Mihaylo College of Business Distinguished Faculty award.
Shaun also recently received a university-level service award for outstanding service to students, the university, or the external community.
SHRLR alumnus Kevin Cox to receive Academy of Management HR Division Distinguished HR Executive Award
The award is given to executives who have distinguished themselves throughout their careers in the field of human resources management. This year, the award winner is L. Kevin Cox, Chief Human Resources Officer, American Express Company. He is the primary architect of American Express' human capital plan and related strategies that focus on making American Express one of the most financially successful and respected companies in the world. Kevin is a frequent speaker on strategy, building organizational capability and increasing the role and influence of Human Resources in global business. He is active in a number of professional HR organizations, serving on the boards of the Human Resources Policy Association and the National Academy of Human Resources and is also one of a small number of CHROs serving on the Board of Directors of a public company.
We are also honored to have Mr. Cox as the keynote speaker at this year's graduation brunch.
The School is pleased to announce the Donna and Marvin Zischke Endowed Professorship in SHRLR and the Donna and Marvin Zischke Scholarship in SHRLR
After a distinguished career at MSU, Donna Zischke and her husband Marvin are providing the means for the School of Human Resources and Labor Relations' (SHRLR) to attract prominent faculty and outstanding students equipped for innovation and leadership in the human resources profession. Through a combination of their philanthropic vision for MSU and their comprehensive estate planning, the Zischkes have pledged a significant future gift to fund the Donna and Marvin Zischke Endowed Professorship in SHRLR which will enable the recruitment and perpetual funding of a faculty member who is prominent in the human resources discipline with an exceptional record of achievements.
In addition, Donna and Marvin pledged annual cash contributions to establish the Donna and Marvin Zischke Scholarship in SHRLR. Both the professorship and scholarship are endowed funds that will provide valuable long-term stability in the school. The couple sees the two gifts as interrelated.

In this article, we examine how well industrial relations meta-theories, when combined with efforts to build middle-range theories, provide distinctive explanations and different predictions for the alternatives that have emerged to date to fill the void.
