Biosketch

Professor Cooke received his PhD from the University of Illinois in 1977 and has previously been on the faculty and held various leadership and administrative positions at Purdue University, the University of Michigan, and Wayne State University. He has also held visiting faculty positions at Cornell University, the University of California, Berkeley, and most recently at the School of Labor & Industrial Relations at Michigan State University.

Listed in Who's Who in Economics, Bill is the author of numerous articles and several books about multinational companies and their global HR/LR strategies, international workplace systems, knowledge-based HR and technology strategies, and union-management cooperation. His research has been funded by a wide range of foundations (including NSF, the Russell Sage Foundation, and the Rockefeller Foundation) and he has presented his findings at roughly 100 conferences across 20 countries.

In addition, Bill has extensive experience working directly with HR/LR professionals in the field. He has served as a consultant to more than 25 major companies and in various advisory positions, such as a trustee on the UAW-Ford VEBA and as a member of the Community Leaders Advisory Committee to DTE Energy. Over the last 25 years, Bill has also been an instructor and director of the Labor-Management Relations Center in executive education at the University of Michigan.

Biosketch

Peter Berg is an associate professor at the School of Human Resources and Labor Relations at Michigan State University.

His research interests include work-life flexibility policies and practices, high performance work systems, and international comparisons of flexible work arrangements. Dr. Berg has conducted research focusing on employees in a variety of industries, including the steel, apparel, medical electronics, hospital, and other manufacturing and service industries. He has served as an executive board member of the Labor and Employment Relations Association USA and authored numerous publications in a variety of academic journals.

In 2006, Dr. Berg received a Fulbright Senior Scholar Award to the University of Sydney to study work-life flexibility in Australian organizations. He has presented his research throughout North America, Europe, and Asia. His current research examines the role of labor unions in shaping organizational work-life flexibility policies and practices in the U.S. and Australia. In addition, he is working on an edited book on international comparisons of working time practices.

The Impact of Working-Time Configurations in Comparative Perspective
Peter Berg, Gerhard Bosch, and Jean Charest are working together on this project to produce an edited volume that analyzes the effects of working time configurations through five thematic chapters that address important issues across countries and through five country chapters that connect various issues developed in the thematic chapters to country specific working time configurations. A key theme of emphasis will be the impact of various working time arrangements and options for older workers. Other thematic chapters include working time and work-family balance, working time configurations and economic outcomes, working time and health benefits, and an examination of shorter working weeks. Look for this new book in 2012.

Work-Life Flexibility in Unionized Workplaces: Changing Dialogue and Negotiating Change
Peter Berg and Ellen Kossek on this study designed to increase understanding of the role union representatives and managers play in how workers use and experience flexibility policies and practices, and the links these policies and practices have to organizational performance and worker well-being.

The Gradual Retirement Decision and its Impact on Health
This project is in its preliminary stages. Mary Hamman and Peter Berg are using a new source of German matched employer-employee data (LIAB) coupled with a quasi experimental design to study gradual retirement decisions and health impacts.

Biosketch

Julie L. Brockman is an Associate Professor in the School of Human Resources and Labor Relations at Michigan State University. She is an instructor and consultant for the Labor Education Program (LEP) and the Program on Innovative Employment Relations Systems (PIERS). As an instructor for LEP, Julie has conducted workshops at local and national levels for union organizations and their joint partners. As a consultant for PIERS, she assists unionized organizations, both within the private and public sectors, in developing and implementing joint union/management initiatives. In addition to her work with the School of Human Resources and Labor Relations, Julie coordinates the Conflict Resolution Program for the Graduate School at Michigan State University. Julie's primary research interests focus on the workplace as a location for adult learning and development, negotiation and conflict resolution, the process of joint union/management collaboration and professional development of adult educators.

Prior to her work with the School of Human Resources and Labor Relations, Julie was employed by the Nestle' Chocolate and Confections facility in Fulton, NY ('86-'95) and the TRW, Inc. Aircrafts Components Group in Euclid, Ohio ('84-'86).

Biosketch

Theodore H. (Terry) Curry is the Associate Provost and Associate Vice President for Academic Human Resources at Michigan State University. Prior to becoming Associate Provost, he served eight years as Director of the graduate School of Labor and Industrial Relations (Now the School of Human Resources and Labor Relations) of Michigan State University. He is also a professor of human resources management and holds graduate and undergraduate degrees in business administration with concentration in human resources management from the University of Kansas. He has served as a consultant to a number of companies, and associations on human resources management and training concerns and was appointed a charter member of the Michigan Governor's Labor Management Advisory Committee. He served as President of the University Council of Industrial Relations and Human Resources Programs. He has written a number of articles for professional publications including the Personnel Administrator, Training and Development Journal, and Effective Practices for Academic Leaders.

Jeff Ericksen is an Assistant Professor of Human Resource Management in the School of Human Resources and Labor Relations at Michigan State University. He earned a M.B.A. from Cornell University's Johnson School and his PhD in Human Resource Studies from Cornell's ILR School.

Professor Ericksen teaches and conducts research in the areas of strategic human resource management, project team mobilization and performance, and the role of HR practices in driving human resource ambidexterity. His research has been accepted for publication in several journals and books including Administrative Science Quarterly and Human Resource Management. In addition, he received the Ralph Alexander Best Dissertation Award from the Human Resources Division of the Academy of Management. Professor Ericksen currently teaches courses in Business Strategy and Human Resource Management and Finance for Human Resource Professionals.

Stacy Hickox received her Bachelor's degree from the School of Industrial and Labor Relations at Cornell University and received her law degree from the University of Pennsylvania.

Stacy practiced law in the area of disability law at Michigan Protection and Advocacy Service prior to coming to SHRLR. Ms. Hickox also taught for several years at MSU's law school, including courses in employment law, civil rights, and disability law.

Stacy has written a book on the Americans with Disabilities Act and several law review articles on various aspects of employment law. Her current research focuses on the employment of ex-offenders, including potential claims for adverse impact and negligent hiring liability.

Dr. Hoch has been a Researcher at the Institute of Work and Organizational Psychology at the University of Kiel and an Assistant Professor at the University of Technology in Munich and at the University of Dresden. She has an outstanding record of scholarship, having published extensively and presented her research throughout Europe and the U.S. on issues of shared leadership, team dynamics, and diversity in organizations.

Biosketch

Michelle Kaminski, PhD is an Associate Professor in the School of Human Resources and Labor Relations. She works primarily in the area of labor education, teaching workshops for union members and leaders on a wide range of topics including labor law, stewards training, collective bargaining, union leadership, workplace bullying, communication skills, FMLA, and basic economics.

Professor Kaminski received the 2010 Wurf Fellowship from the Labor and Worklife Program at Harvard Law School for her work on gender and union leadership. She is editor of the Labor Studies Journal, the top academic journal in labor education. Previously, she was a bargaining unit chair with the Washington-Baltimore Newspaper Guild Local 35, now part of CWA. She also served as University Vice President (program chair) of the United Association for Labor Education (UALE).

Workplace bullying (or "lateral violence") among nurses | Download Preliminary Report PDF
In collaboration with the Michigan Nurses Association, Professor Kaminski has surveyed nurses in four hospitals in Michigan regarding the extent of workplace bullying. Preliminary results show that about 20 percent of nurses are subject to bullying on a regular basis. Nurses who are the target of bullying are more likely to have symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder and are more likely to consider leaving their jobs.

Professor Kaminski and Jailza Pauly (UC Berkeley) conducted a qualitative study of participants in the Harvard Trade Union Program, exploring their path to leadership. Using Kurt Lewin's model of supporting and restraining forces, and analyzing data at the individual, personal (i.e. non-work related), group, and organizational level of analysis, this study finds that women union leaders encounter far more restraining forces than male union leaders, and they are particularly subject to pressures at the personal and group levels.

Professional women's strategies for coping with gender inequality
Professor Kaminski and Jailza Pauly (UC Berkeley) propose a new model of how professional women respond to workplace inequality and discrimination. The model includes five strategies, bases on the woman's level of commitment to individual professional goals and commitment to collective feminist goals. The five strategies are Two-track striver, Competitor, Bystander, Volunteer organizer, and Satisficer. A draft of the paper is available on request.

Biosketch

Dr. Kossek is a University Distinguished Professor at Michigan State University's School of Human Resources and Labor Relations. A popular keynote speaker and facilitator of organizational change management, managing work and family, workplace flexibility, culture, inclusion, international HR, gender and diversity.

Dr. Kossek is a founding member and co PI of the U.S. National Institutes of Health Work Family Health Network and an Associate Director of the Center for Work, Family Health and Stress. She is Chair of the School's PhD committee to lead administration with colleagues. She was elected to the Board of Governors of the National Academy of Management, Chair of the Gender and Diversity in Organizations Division, and a Fellow of APA and SIOP.

She has won many awards including the Sage Scholarly Achievement award recognizing research to advance gender and diversity in organizations. She has received funding from Alfred P. Sloan and Gerber Foundations, CDC and NIH, foreign governments, and employers. She serves or has served on many journal editorial boards, boards of directors, and advisory boards, including the Work-Life Center at IESE in Spain. She has published eight books on diversity, work-life and human resource management, most recently CEO of Me: Creating a Life That Works in the Flexible Job Age (with Lautsch, 2008, Wharton School Publishing), a book on work-life flexstyles. She has been a visiting scholar at the University of Michigan, Center for Creative Leadership, University of Warwick, UK, the University of Adelaide, Australia, and Harvard Business School.

Prior to becoming a professor, she worked for many leading companies in the area of human resource management in senior staff and key advising postions in the U.S., Europe, and the Americas.

Since 1990, Ed has worked at Michigan State University for the School of Human Resources and Labor Relations. In addition to his faculty role, Ed has also served as Associate Director for Academic Programs and as Acting Director for the School.

After many years studying employee compensation systems, Ed shifted the focus of his research to the study of Employment Ethics; with a particular emphasis on the ethical responsibilities employers have vis-à-vis their employees.

At Michigan State University, Ed has taught graduate courses dealing with: (1) Introduction to Human Resource Management; (2) Employee Compensation Systems; (3) Doing Business in Mexico; (4) Quantitative Methods for HR Professionals; and (5) Business Fundamentals for HR Professionals. He has also taught at the University of Redlands Business School and at the Graduate School of Business Administration (EGADE) in Mexico's Monterrey Tech. Ed has also taught a series of executive (not-for-credit) seminars dealing with specific employee compensation topics, which include: Pay Administration Fundamentals; Performance Management and Appraisal; Performance-Based Pay; Skill-Based Pay; and Group Incentives.

Ed holds a Bachelors degree in Industrial Engineering from Monterrey Tech (in Mexico) and a Ph. D., with concentration on Employee Compensation and Organization Theory, from the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota.

JOHN L. REVITTE, Michigan State University (MSU) Professor of Work, Leisure and Labor Studies, was named the university's Faculty Grievance Official (FGO) following approval by the MSU Board of Trustees on Friday, February 13, 2004. Revitte was hired by MSU's School of Labor and Industrial Relations (Now the School of Human Resources and Labor Relations) as an LIR Instructor in 1977. For SHRLR's Labor Education Program he has designed over 555 courses and conferences, and taught over 4,000 instructional hours, primarily non-credit, for Michigan labor union leaders on collective bargaining, dispute resolution and grievance handling, employment and labor laws, labor history and current events, and union administration and leadership skills. He also taught thirteen semesters in the SLIR graduate school: American Labor History; Collective Bargaining; Trade Union History, Structure and Administration; and Workers' Education and Training in LIR, as well as a couple Freshman Seminars for the Provost's Office on Work and Leisure: Changing Definitions; and Sweatshops, Strikes and Students: Seeking Justice at Work. Besides activity as FGO, Revitte provides active service to MSU, his field and the general public; writes training materials, grant proposals, articles, monographs, book and film reviews; co-authored and produced several Michigan labor history videos; and he is often interviewed on historic and current labor events by television, radio and newspaper journalists. Revitte studied at the University of Michigan's Residential College, graduating in 1972, and in 1976 he received a Master of Science in Labor Studies from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.

Elaine's research interests include the study of difference and power in organizations using long-term research methods. With her colleagues from Cal Poly, Louise Soe and Ruth Guthrie, she is currently conducting research on the effect of organizational culture on women and men working in the information technology in the U.S. Abstracts for recent conference papers can be found in the AIS Electronic library ("Support Structures for Women in Information Technology Careers" and "Does Culture Matter? A Study of Cultural Influences on the Success of Women in IT"). Her fieldwork includes studies of information technology consultants in the U.S. and nuclear power plants in Japan and the U.S. Her articles include "Billables: The meaning of time in consulting" in the American Behavioral Scientist (2001), and "Charting time: Timelines as temporal boundary objects," in the Academy of Management Journal (2002). She has a PhD in Organization Studies from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and a JD from UC Berkeley.

Elaine received the Dr. Daniel Kruger Award from the SLIR Alumni Association at the SLIR 50th Anniversary celebration in 2006, the Excellence in Education Award from the Industrial Relations Research Association (now known as LERA) at their annual meeting in 2002. As an MSU Lilly Teaching Fellow (1998-1999), she developed classroom video teaching techniques to enhance the student learning of so-called "soft" skills. In 2009, Elaine taught an ISS course in work group dynamics. In 2009 and 2010, she taught negotiations at Seoul National University's Graduate School of Business.
