Biosketch

Professor Cooke received his PhD from the University of Illinois in 1977 and has previously been on the faculty and held various leadership and administrative positions at Purdue University, the University of Michigan, and Wayne State University. He has also held visiting faculty positions at Cornell University, the University of California, Berkeley, and most recently at the School of Labor & Industrial Relations at Michigan State University.

Listed in Who's Who in Economics, Bill is the author of numerous articles and several books about multinational companies and their global HR/LR strategies, international workplace systems, knowledge-based HR and technology strategies, and union-management cooperation. His research has been funded by a wide range of foundations (including NSF, the Russell Sage Foundation, and the Rockefeller Foundation) and he has presented his findings at roughly 100 conferences across 20 countries.

In addition, Bill has extensive experience working directly with HR/LR professionals in the field. He has served as a consultant to more than 25 major companies and in various advisory positions, such as a trustee on the UAW-Ford VEBA and as a member of the Community Leaders Advisory Committee to DTE Energy. Over the last 25 years, Bill has also been an instructor and director of the Labor-Management Relations Center in executive education at the University of Michigan.

Biosketch

John P. Beck is an Associate Professor in the School of Human Resources & Labor Relations at Michigan State University. He previously served as associate director of the School, primarily in charge of two of the School's outreach units, the Labor Education Program and Union Management Initiatives. He also co-directs a project (with Karen Klomparens, the Dean of the MSU Graduate School), "Building Mutual Expectations and Resolving Conflicts in Graduate Education," on the use of interest-based conflict resolution approaches for graduate students and their faculty mentors. John holds degrees from Michigan State University and the University of Michigan. He worked for five years on the staff of the University of Michigan Labor Studies Center. He has taught labor studies on the community college level in both Oklahoma and Michigan and has taught history and education courses at the university level.

Biosketch

Dale Belman is a professor in the School of Human Resources & Labor Relations at Michigan State University. He conducts research on unions and has forthcoming research on construction unionism (with Allen Smith). Belman has also written about truckers and trucking, public-sector employment, minimum-wage and low-wage work. He received his master's and doctoral degrees at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and his bachelor's degree from Bowdoin College.

Biosketch

Peter Berg is an associate professor at the School of Human Resources and Labor Relations at Michigan State University.

His research interests include work-life flexibility policies and practices, high performance work systems, and international comparisons of flexible work arrangements. Dr. Berg has conducted research focusing on employees in a variety of industries, including the steel, apparel, medical electronics, hospital, and other manufacturing and service industries. He has served as an executive board member of the Labor and Employment Relations Association USA and authored numerous publications in a variety of academic journals.

In 2006, Dr. Berg received a Fulbright Senior Scholar Award to the University of Sydney to study work-life flexibility in Australian organizations. He has presented his research throughout North America, Europe, and Asia. His current research examines the role of labor unions in shaping organizational work-life flexibility policies and practices in the U.S. and Australia. In addition, he is working on an edited book on international comparisons of working time practices.

Biosketch

Julie L. Brockman is an Assistant Professor in the School of Human Resources and Labor Relations at Michigan State University. As an instructor, Julie has conducted workshops at local and national levels for union organizations and their joint partners. As a consultant, she assists unionized organizations, both within the private and public sectors, in developing and implementing joint union/management initiatives. In addition to her work with the School of Human Resources and Labor Relations, Julie coordinates the Conflict Resolution Program for the Graduate School at Michigan State University. Julie's primary research interests focus on the workplace as a location for adult learning and development, negotiation and conflict resolution, the process of joint union/management collaboration and professional development of adult educators.

Prior to her work with the School of Human Resources and Labor Relations, Julie was employed by the Nestle' Chocolate and Confections facility in Fulton, NY ('86-'95) and the TRW, Inc. Aircrafts Components Group in Euclid, Ohio ('84-'86).

Biosketch

Theodore H. (Terry) Curry is the Associate Provost and Associate Vice President for Academic Human Resources at Michigan State University. Prior to becoming Associate Provost, he served eight years as Director of the graduate School of Labor and Industrial Relations (Now the School of Human Resources and Labor Relations) of Michigan State University. He is also a professor of human resources management and holds graduate and undergraduate degrees in business administration with concentration in human resources management from the University of Kansas. He has served as a consultant to a number of companies, and associations on human resources management and training concerns and was appointed a charter member of the Michigan Governor's Labor Management Advisory Committee. He served as President of the University Council of Industrial Relations and Human Resources Programs. He has written a number of articles for professional publications including the Personnel Administrator, Training and Development Journal, and Effective Practices for Academic Leaders.

Jeff Ericksen is an Assistant Professor of Human Resource Management in the School of Human Resources and Labor Relations at Michigan State University. He earned a M.B.A. from Cornell University's Johnson School and his PhD in Human Resource Studies from Cornell's ILR School.

Professor Ericksen teaches and conducts research in the areas of strategic human resource management, project team mobilization and performance, and the role of HR practices in driving human resource ambidexterity. His research has been accepted for publication in several journals and books including Administrative Science Quarterly and Human Resource Management. In addition, he received the Ralph Alexander Best Dissertation Award from the Human Resources Division of the Academy of Management. Professor Ericksen currently teaches courses in Business Strategy and Human Resource Management and Finance for Human Resource Professionals.

Stacy Hickox received her Bachelor's degree from the School of Industrial and Labor Relations at Cornell University and received her law degree from the University of Pennsylvania.

Stacy practiced law in the area of disability law at Michigan Protection and Advocacy Service prior to coming to SHRLR. Ms. Hickox also taught for several years at MSU's law school, including courses in employment law, civil rights, and disability law.

Stacy has written a book on the Americans with Disabilities Act and several law review articles on various aspects of employment law. Her current research focuses on the employment of ex-offenders, including potential claims for adverse impact and negligent hiring liability.

Biosketch

Michelle Kaminski, PhD is an Associate Professor in the School of Human Resources and Labor Relations. She works primarily in the area of labor education, teaching workshops for union members and leaders on a wide range of topics including labor law, stewards training, collective bargaining, union leadership, workplace bullying, communication skills, FMLA, and basic economics.

Professor Kaminski received the 2010 Wurf Fellowship from the Labor and Worklife Program at Harvard Law School for her work on gender and union leadership. She is editor of the Labor Studies Journal, the top academic journal in labor education. Previously, she was a bargaining unit chair with the Washington-Baltimore Newspaper Guild Local 35, now part of CWA. She also served as University Vice President (program chair) of the United Association for Labor Education (UALE).

JOHN L. REVITTE, Michigan State University (MSU) Professor of Work, Leisure and Labor Studies, was named the university's Faculty Grievance Official (FGO) following approval by the MSU Board of Trustees on Friday, February 13, 2004. Revitte was hired by MSU's School of Labor and Industrial Relations (Now the School of Human Resources and Labor Relations) as an LIR Instructor in 1977. For SHRLR's Labor Education Program he has designed over 555 courses and conferences, and taught over 4,000 instructional hours, primarily non-credit, for Michigan labor union leaders on collective bargaining, dispute resolution and grievance handling, employment and labor laws, labor history and current events, and union administration and leadership skills. He also taught thirteen semesters in the SLIR graduate school: American Labor History; Collective Bargaining; Trade Union History, Structure and Administration; and Workers' Education and Training in LIR, as well as a couple Freshman Seminars for the Provost's Office on Work and Leisure: Changing Definitions; and Sweatshops, Strikes and Students: Seeking Justice at Work. Besides activity as FGO, Revitte provides active service to MSU, his field and the general public; writes training materials, grant proposals, articles, monographs, book and film reviews; co-authored and produced several Michigan labor history videos; and he is often interviewed on historic and current labor events by television, radio and newspaper journalists. Revitte studied at the University of Michigan's Residential College, graduating in 1972, and in 1976 he received a Master of Science in Labor Studies from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.

Elaine's research interests include the study of difference and power in organizations using long-term research methods. With her colleagues from Cal Poly, Louise Soe and Ruth Guthrie, she is currently conducting research on the effect of organizational culture on women and men working in the information technology in the U.S. Abstracts for recent conference papers can be found in the AIS Electronic library ("Support Structures for Women in Information Technology Careers" and "Does Culture Matter? A Study of Cultural Influences on the Success of Women in IT"). Her fieldwork includes studies of information technology consultants in the U.S. and nuclear power plants in Japan and the U.S. Her articles include "Billables: The meaning of time in consulting" in the American Behavioral Scientist (2001), and "Charting time: Timelines as temporal boundary objects," in the Academy of Management Journal (2002). She has a PhD in Organization Studies from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and a JD from UC Berkeley.

Elaine received the Dr. Daniel Kruger Award from the SLIR Alumni Association at the SLIR 50th Anniversary celebration in 2006, the Excellence in Education Award from the Industrial Relations Research Association (now known as LERA) at their annual meeting in 2002. As an MSU Lilly Teaching Fellow (1998-1999), she developed classroom video teaching techniques to enhance the student learning of so-called "soft" skills. In 2009, Elaine taught an ISS course in work group dynamics. In 2009 and 2010, she taught negotiations at Seoul National University's Graduate School of Business.
